This village landscape by Prakash Karmakar is not very quiet and dreamy. The signals that a nature red in tooth and nail lurks nearby are given by the ominously red sky and the red glow in the water. The banana plantation is also menacingly dense and along with the Fauvist color palate it brings in mind Rousseaus naive paintings of tropical jungles. But the fact that Prakash Karmakar is a great colorist comes from the great variations he creates with just leaf green ultramarine blue and vermillion red. Whether its a red hunters moon on the sky or a setting sun Karmakar leaves that up to us to decide.
